I bought it as a present for someone who never had one because her parents thought it was a waste of money when it first came out.

For a long car trip, you can make things and pass it around. We had one and had deaccessed it, but planning two 10 hour drives we needed to restock.

There were three of us sisters growing up in the 50s and 60s but only my youngest sister mastered the Etch A Sketch. Seven years younger than us she’d twist those dials and turn out impossibly complicated scenes that boggled us two older girls and dumbfounded our parents. This Christmas I surprised her, now age 50, with a new Etch A Sketch; she’d not touched one since childhood. Everyone hooted, but she quietly got down to work spinning the dials. In just a few moments she’d ‘drawn’ a scene from a women’s section in a department store. Dresses, blouses, skirts, and pants hung from hangers and mannequins displayed elaborate hats with feathers. Etch A Sketch still has the power to work magic for those with the right talent. Or maybe I should say ‘left’ talent as my sister is left-handed.
